Maharashtra advances single use plastic enforcement with stricter measures and fine restructuring.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has directed BMC to strengthen the enforcement of the 2018 ban on single use plastic, including carry bags. MPCB chairperson Siddhesh Kadam emphasized the challenges posed by plastic products entering from neighboring states, urging inter-state action on manufacturers. From January to December 2024, BMC collected over ₹41.7 lakh in fines, but officials highlighted difficulties in penalizing hawkers who often cannot pay. To address this, BMC is considering restructuring the fine system, aiming for a more effective and fair approach. Plans are also underway to establish five-member monitoring teams in every ward to ensure compliance. This initiative reinforces Maharashtra’s commitment to plastic-free progress and demonstrates proactive steps by civic authorities and MPCB leadership in advancing the SUP elimination mission.
