Reinforcing the Ban on Single-Use Plastics

Driving compliance through localised enforcement

Driving compliance through localised enforcement

MPCB, guided by Siddhesh Kadam, reasserted and enforced the ban on single-use plastics in Mumbai, focusing on everyday polluters like disposable cutlery, polythene bags, and packaging waste. While the state-level policy existed, Mr. Kadam pushed for localized action and inspection, ensuring the ban moved from policy to public practice. Raids, public awareness campaigns, and penalties were deployed in tandem to drive visible behavioral change.

Mr. Kadam’s leadership highlights his belief that small actions, when widely adopted, lead to big environmental shifts. By focusing on plastics, a pervasive pollutant, he directed MPCB’s machinery to address urban waste at a daily use level. His approach focuses not just on banning, but on educating, enabling alternatives, and setting up enforcement routines that last.
